RuPaul – “American” | Review

RuPaul actually makes a good track, in place of typical EDM cheese, on the patriotic and political, “American.”

Yes, I can’t believe it’s happened, but RuPaul has released a track that’s made for more than just the gay bars and his own Drag Race runway!

If you don’t know who RuPaul, for starters, where have you even been!?! Drag Race is the best-worst TV show in forever. She is a drag queen that’s been at the top of her game since the 90s, they don’t call her Momma Ru for nothing.

Most tracks from Ru cross the line of cheesy and are really only popular across the LGBT community, but with “American,” possibly because of the lyrical nature in retrospect to the times we live in, it actually works.

The EDM tones are turned for this one – don’t get me wrong, this is still an EDM club banger, but Ru takes centre stage, rather than the production. And can we just point out that we know Ru is autotuned to fuck, but she still sounds good! If you want an un-autotuned queen go to Adore Delano.

Lyrically, the song talks about acceptance, and more importantly, fighting against those who are trying to push back equal rights, for not only the LGBT community but racism and sexism – in the wake of Trumps America.

You got the right/Stand up for yourself, we’ve just begun to fight/Ain’t no way we’re going back in time/Forward to the future baby, yours and mine.

A timely release, Ru, get that promotion in on Drag Race!
