Julia Michaels – “Nervous System” | EP Review

Everybody take note! Julia Michaels is THE hottest new talent in pop music and Nervous System is an absolute masterpiece.

Michaels is known the world over for her mega-hit, “Issues,” and the problem is that the song may just overwrite her career – which is a shame because that’s possibly the least exciting track on her new EP.

In short, this EP is fucking amazing!

Rarely does an EP do anything other than just highlight how good the lead single is and how average the rest of the songs are – well, Michaels has just gone and changed that!

Every track on here is distinctly Michaels track, keeping to her breathy, whisper like vocal signature, yet the production varies, as well as the lyrical sentiment.

Second single, “Uh Huh,” has a kick to it, a kind of rough, unfinished edge which ultimately makes it perfect – and tonnes better than “Issues.”

“Worst In Me” is the most traditionally put together pop song on the EP and once again goes to show how vast her songwriting is when compared to the more forgiving “Make It Up To You.”

She even has a sex song on here, “Pink,” who’d have thought on such an emotionally expressive set of music you’d get that! The more playful production matches the playfulness and tongue-in-cheek lyrics, “He’s got a thing for fitness, seven days a week, but I don’t really care unless he’s working out with me…there’s no innuendos, it’s exactly what you think, believe me when I tell you that he loves the colour pink” – it’s all so cheeky!

The track that shines more brightly than the rest though is the last song, “Don’t Wanna Think.” What’s most striking about the simple piano ballad is it’s such straightforward, conversational like lyrics.

I could really quote any of the lyrics here, as they all are amazing, but the last two lines really capture the essence of the song:

I know that when I wake there’s gonna be seven texts and three calls to you and I’m not gonna know what to do

I’ll make up some excuse about how that was meant for someone else when the truth is I’m not over you.

Bow down to the new queen that is Michaels!
