Jason Derulo is back with a lot fewer features than his last single, “Swalla,” with his latest track, “If I’m Lucky.”
Let’s be honest, “Swalla” wasn’t the greatest song in the world, but it sure was catchy – and that Nicki Minaj feature totally stole the show.
Now, back by himself, it’s back to a Derulo we’re used to seeing with an R&B laden dance track that takes a more minimalist approach with its guitar lead beat.
Derulo’s vocals are always good, you get the usual kinda restrained vocals with the odd bit of pitchy power notes…that he can surprisingly reproduce in live performances.
But something about this track just doesn’t land in great territory, more like meh, I don’t hate it but I’d skip it on the radio kinda territory.
Following such a catchy hit like “Swalla” is hard, and unfortunately, it doesn’t hit the mark.
Also, don’t you think the beginning sounds a lot like Shawn Mendes’ “Nothing Holdin’ Me Back?”
