Not even the marvelous Julia Michaels can save Maroon 5‘s latest single, “Help Me Out,” from being a large pile of meh.
Michaels is on the verge of crossing over from rising star to fully fledged star, largely thanks to “Issues,” although her entire EP was fucking great – and well, Maroon 5 are Maroon 5.
The song starts out positive, distorted guitar and lowkey synth beats take us to the chorus where we’re expecting a huge pop blowout, instead, we’re greeted with an even more restrained production.
Sometimes an understated chorus helps songs and lifts them to new levels of amazingness – that is not the case here.
The saving grace here is how well Adam Lavigne and Michaels voices sound together – can we start a petition to add Michaels to Maroon 5.
This single was dropped with the announcement of their sixth studio album, Red Pill Blues, but with the band failing to create a successful promo run (started last October), we’re unsure this track is the one to get people excited.
