Sam Smith – “Burning” | Review

Sam Smith shares his favourite track from the upcoming album, The Thrill Of It All, “Burning” – it’s an emotional one!

Smith is possibly the biggest male artist in the U.K right now, and the anticipation for his third album is pretty high – but has his ballad blueprint come to a dull end?

Well, kind of, yeah!

Don’t get us wrong, we love a good ballad that’s packed full of emotion that we can sit here crying into our vodka-cokes, but with Smith, you always know what he’s going to release and the shine comes off that feeling a little.

Some might raise the Adele argument, but have you listened to 25? The album is obviously full of ballads, but there are different tempos, sounds and lyrical content – with Smith its crappy relationships and the same gospel-esque sound.

“I’ve been burning up since you left,” is the main lyric that sums up the message in the song, Smith has been in a dark place since an ex left – but isn’t this the same message we’ve heard before.

Some people love this sound and don’t want anything else and that’s fair enough, but we’re just asking for a little versatility on this album – something like, “Like I Can” or “Money On My Mind,” or even a collaboration with Disclosure again, just something that’s not a piano ballad with a gospel-like final chorus.
