Remy Ma – “Wake Me Up” ft. Lil Kim | Review

Would Remy Ma or Lil Kim be here anymore without Nicki Minaj? “Wake Me Up” pushes us to think so.

Okay, there’s no denying Remy or Kim’s talent as female rappers and their influences on the genre back in the day – and sure, Remy’s prison time halted her moment on the scene – but nowadays, the space for them seems to be getting smaller and smaller.

You’ve probably heard of the drama surrounding Nicki Minaj and Remy (nevermind the year’s feud with Kim) this year with diss track after diss track being releases – notably Minaj’s “No Frauds” and the cutting “Sheather” by Remy.

Well, Remy has gone on tape and said that Minaj can’t stop talking about her and that she’s obsessed – hmm, strange when the only reason that she has had a burst in popularity is because¬†the feud, let’s be real, the BET Award wouldn’t be hers without Minaj!

While this track doesn’t mention names, there are obvious digs at the current Queen of rap, “Spray the fif, that crown? I’mma take that shit/ Cause you a clown and homie don’t play that shit” –¬†honey, that crown isn’t moving.

The song isn’t bad, but it’s nothing special and it sounds extremely dated, say, 2003, so 15 years out of date.

On the run up to Remy’s album release, we need some better, up-to-date and un-Minaj related material if she wants to prove she can be a star without her.
