iiola – “chewing gum” | Review

iiola is fast proving she’s not to be underestimated with a slew of perfectly crafted alt-pop releases – new single, “chewing gum,” is no exception.

Formerly known by her real name, Shannon Saunders, the star released great pop songs for years, but as her writing and sound slowly changed, Saunders decided to create the iiola persona, and it weirdly suits her new sound.

“chewing gum” is a slow-building track that opens with a focus on her voice and quickly races to the synth explosion of the chorus that has an airy, atmospheric nature to it.

That’s where the magic is in this song, where iiola’s intriguingly delicate yet strong vocals meet the hypnotic production and together take the song to a whole other level.

Lyrically, the song discusses the power and destructiveness that social media can have on a person – the pressure to show and have a perfect life.

iiola is currently working towards her debut album and if this is anything to go by, we are going to be in for a treat!
