Halsey – “Nightmare” | Review

Halsey welcomes us to a new era with a darker perspective on “Nightmare.”

After the star first solo number one last year with “Without Me,” all eyes were on Halsey to see if she could follow up with something as great, or even better – and I think she might have succeeded.

“Without Me” saw Halsey in her comfortable home indie-synth-pop, and while “Nightmare” still can be categorised in that genre, it’s been pushed right to the border with its harsher beats that have a rock-esque attitude to them.

Dark themes aren’t new for Halsey, always giving us an unapologetic look into her life, but “Nightmare” might just be her most open yet.

“I’ve trusted lies and trusted men/Broke down and put myself back together again/Stared in the mirror and punched it to shatters/Collected the pieces and picked out a dagger/I’ve pinched my skin in between my two fingers/And wished I could cut some parts off with some scissors”

The real life in this song comes from when the beat drops into the chorus and crosses the border from usually Halsey synth to the new, more aggressive and chaotic side that we hope we’ll hear more of on her upcoming third album.
