Taylor Swift – “You Need To Calm Down” | Review

Taylor Swift doesn’t quite seem sure of herself on her new single “You Need To Calm Down.”

Swift’s Reputation era was far from a flop, but it wasn’t as huge as what she’s used to, especially only having only one huge song to come from it, probably why her new album seems almost rushed out.

“You Need To Calm Down” comes off a little confused, a cross between the sickly sweet image and sound that she played with during the country-pop cross mix of her early years and the perfect pop moment that she brought us with 1989, but it doesn’t quite stick.

I’m not saying the production isn’t a bop, but I struggle to take it from an artist that refuses to stick to a particular path in terms of personality – least when Madonna came back with a different sound, it was always Madonna at heart, even with Lady Gaga‘s Joanne, there was still an evident Gaga personality there, with Swifts last two songs, that’s missing.

One thing I will get behind is the homophobia bashing message of the song, it’s a welcome change from the bashing of her own haters.

We’re still here and we will be waiting for her whole album to drop before ruling this era off altogether, but at the moment, it seems like it’s going to be a huge miss.
